Would we not all love to live here? Old cottage at the Ankeveense Plassen near Ankeveen/The Netherlands.

The reflection is so clear, it's as if it was a mirror. Do they call it a glassy lake? :P

I told you before that such a house can only stand in the areas of controlled water levels. As long as we have electricity, you are safe, as the pumps will keep the water levels in good order.
It is different with the big rivers like the River Waal. There you can indeed not build near the river like this.

AMAZING. AMAZING BECAUSE IT'S A BEAUTIFUL SHOT; AND BECAUSE I STILL CAN'T BELIEVE THAT HOUSE CAN BE SO CLOSE AT WATER-LEVEL AND NOT GET FLOODED 5 TIMES A YEAR AS IT WOULD HERE IN MISSISSIPPI. IF THIS STREAM WERE THE PEARL RIVER HERE WHERE I LIVE, THAT HOUSE WOULD HAVE BEEN WASHED AWAY SOON AFTER BEING BUILT. THE WATER LEVEL WOULD GET UP PAST THE ROOF.

YES, I KNOW YOU TOLD ME; BUT THIS HOUSE WAS BUILT BEFORE ELECTRICITY; BUT I GUESS STEAM POWER IS JUST AS STRONG AS ELECTRICITY; AND BEFORE THAT, THE WINDMILLS.
BUT I DIDN'T THINK EVEN NOW, THEY COULD REGULATE THE WATER LEVEL SO CLOSELY AS TO SET THE HOUSE MERE INCHES ABOVE WATER LEVEL.

Indeed, first there were the windmills, then the steam mills and now we have a mix of mostly electric mills and some additional old windmills that have been reactivated.

As to the closeness of regulating the level, there can be problems of course. One when it rains very, very much (and that is expected more often now in connection with the climate change), but also when it is very dry, as it is in some summers. Then they have a complicated system of spreading extra water across the country, taking it out of the big reservoir, the IJsselmeer. But this has happened only once up till now.
